That canal is what started me fishing again after 6-7 yaears. I moved into a student house (yes i was a student lol) which overlooked it and one day thought i'd try fishing again. A couple of weeks later my dad (main fishing inspiration!!) hooked and landed a 10lb 2oz carp on 3.5lb line........ i was hooked once again!!!
We had many a good days fishing there, pulling out 3-4lb tench and bream as well as the odd carp.
I walked along there the other day for old times sake. Must have seen four shoals of fourty fish in the 4 pegs that weren't covered. Roach and Perch to well over a pound and a half, i swear to this day!!!

It is a shame that newport city council doesn't take the same attitude that other area's do.
Lets hope they get there finger out and return the canal to its former glory, and get the newport stretch navagable again.
The club has over the years spent alot of time on the canal, but being out side the protective bounderies of morgans and woodstock, plus being a public right of way, there is little or nothing NAA can do.

It is in a state, and the Council may one day sort it out. Whilst waiting for that happy day, members may wish to try the stretch by Kimberley park. It's deeper and there should be plenty of fish, as when the lock gates were opened by vandals in the summer most of the fish in Blan-y-pant went over the lock.
If anyone goes there, post it on the forum.

As far as I am aware, the majority of fish went over the lock and nothing appeared to turn up dead. There is still a lot of weed, but it'll be dying off now and easier to fish. Try it out for a few hours. In my experience most canals are quite 'instant' in producing a few bites if the fish are around. Bread punch is the most instant and should produce bites straight away ! The Kimberly park stretch of the canal was fished on the week end by three Newport Members, one of them being Martyn T. The canal was not as couloured as usual but did produce some fine fishing especially up towards the wall end, Tony known as Hoppy had a smashing bag of Roach and Perch all caught on Worm, Punch and Pinkie. The anglers fishing towards the Motorway did not do as good but did pick up some nice fish.
I would say to any angler looking for something different to get down there and have a go as i am sure if you hit it when the conditions are good you should catch a lot of fish. I am having a crack saturday and will let you all know how i got on.
